Mother and Son
Paintings by Peter Pichelmann and textile and fibre works by Caroll Pichelmann

27 March - 27 April 2008
Peter is inspired by the scenery around Canberra, the Brindabellas Lake Eucumbene, as well as further afield in the Tweed Valley and Stradbroke Island. Caroll says she likes her textile and fibre creations to be practical whenever possible, but also inventive, varied and often quirky. Read the media release here.

Mother and son artist team on show

Mawson Gallery presents an exhibition of paintings and textile and fibre works by mother and son artists Caroll and Peter Pichelmann.

Peter says the inspiration for his paintings come from the scenery around Canberra, the Brindabellas Lake Eucumbene, as well as further afield in the Tweed Valley  and Stradbroke Island.

Peter is mostly self taught and is well known for a meticulous accuracy that shows his deep love for his chosen themes.

“Art is in the blood, I suppose.  I did sneak in some metal sculpture and a bit of woodcarving, but now I have picked up the brush,” Peter said.

“Not all my work is just the one scene in the landscape. I sometimes take pieces and meld them together. I love the way light and shade give depth to a scene.

“I want the viewer to be able to see the picture from across the room but then come up close and want to see inside the scene.

“It’s important to me to capture as much reality in my work as possible, but still make it clear that it is a painting.”

Caroll says she likes her textile and fibre creations to be practical whenever possible.

“They should also be inventive, varied and often quirky,” she said. “I have a very dry sense of humour which is often hidden in my art works. I need to challenge myself and I love to play with contradictions.

“I enjoy exploring the potential of whatever comes my way and somehow I seem to infect my friends.  They bring me the most amazing bits they’ve picked up, claiming to look at them ‘through Carroll’s eyes’.

“I’m sure you can do something with this” is a frequently repeated comment from Caroll’s friends.

“I’m grateful for their thoughts and their gifts lead me to work not only with fibre and conventional art materials, but also with ‘media of sheer surprise’,” Caroll said.
